Google XML Sitemaps V3.2.6 made the site very very slow. The sitemap was built but performance was terrible. I also got Apache 500 Internal errors and 'Database has gone away' errors. Host was Godaddy but I installed WP myself so I don't think it's their install process It even effected /wp-admin ! Deactivating Google XML Sitemaps and speed was back. I found this post after disabling Google XML Sitemaps but thought I'd mention it to help someone. Going to do some debugging and contact the author. I had exactly the same problem.
